An example of a unidimensional solidification model

Solidification of fluids simply means changing from a liquid phase into a solid one. The two phases are separated with a discontinuous zone which is called the phase separation zone. The discontinuous zone during solidification moves and increases the zone of a solid phase called the solidified layer, where heat of phase change is generated. This leads to a conclusion that solidification process that occurs at a constant pressure requires heat to be removed from the substance being solidified. The generated heat is usually released to the surroundings through conduction and convection processes. The heat of a phase change in the solidification process of a liquid is called the solidification heat. Phase separation zone separates the two areas of diverse thermophysical properties. The solidification model is presented in figure 1.
